Most people have never booked auto glass before and have no real idea what they are agreeing to. Here is the whole thing in the order it happens, with nothing tucked away in the middle.
Year, make, model, which pane broke and roughly where the damage sits. You get a firm price on that call, not a range and not a promise to get back to you. If the damage is small enough to repair, we say so, even though a replacement pays us more.
We put your carrier on a three way call with you and us, and the claim gets filed while everyone is still on the line. Comprehensive coverage usually pays for glass, and plenty of policies cover chip repair with no deductible at all.

The run north on Lake Pleasant Parkway and out along Carefree Highway is thick with trailers, and trailers carry whatever the last launch ramp left in the tires. Gravel off a boat trailer at highway speed puts a star in your glass the size of a dime, and the driver ahead never feels a thing.
The Peoria Sports Complex was the first spring training home in the county shared by two clubs, and when the Padres and the Mariners are both in camp, the lots and side streets off 83rd Avenue fill up fast. Tight rows and swinging car doors are how side glass and quarter glass get broken.
The Agua Fria stretch of the Loop 101 and the Bell Road crawl through Arrowhead carry commuter traffic bumper to bumper for hours at a stretch. Slow, dense traffic means you follow closer, and following closer is how road debris finds a windshield instead of the asphalt.
Grand Avenue cuts diagonally straight across the valley grid and carries freight rail beside it the whole way. Truck traffic, rough shoulders and older pavement through Old Town make it one of the more dependable places to pick up a chip you never asked for.
The Honest Answer
Nobody wants to buy a windshield they did not need. Nobody wants a repair that fails on the drive home either. This is the standard we hold ourselves to when we look at your glass.
The short rule is three inches. Damage smaller than roughly three inches can normally be filled with resin, sealed and left alone. That is a chip repair, it takes under thirty minutes, and it stops the break from travelling. Anything larger has lost too much strength to trust, so it becomes a full replacement at one to two hours.
Two things override that measurement completely.
There is a legal reason not to sit on it. Arizona lets an officer cite you for damage that obstructs the driver clear view, and a crack running across your sight line qualifies. The structural reason matters more. The windshield helps hold the roof up in a rollover and gives the passenger airbag something to push against when it fires.

The Rest of the Vehicle
A smashed door window on a work truck parked off Grand Avenue is every bit as urgent as a cracked windshield, and it gets the same mobile treatment.
Side and rear panes are tempered rather than laminated, which is why they collapse into thousands of small pieces instead of cracking in a line. That changes the job. Half of it is glass, the other half is getting fragments out of the door cavity, the seat rails and the carpet so they stop turning up for months afterward.
